The Johannesburg High court heard an application by Gold Fields, Anglo American SA and other gold mining companies to appeal against its earlier judgment to certify the largest class action lawsuit in Africa. Working together with two other law firms, the LRC has brought a consolidated class action lawsuit on behalf of gold mineworkers affected by silicosis and tuberculosis, as well as dependents of deceased mineworkers. The lawsuit seeks civil damages because the gold mining companies of South Africa failed to control silica dust in the workplace. If the court certifies the class, the lawsuit will proceed as the largest class lawsuit in Africa with the possibility of damages amounting to billions of rand.
